These were the only men, besides the emperor, allowed to enter the emperor's harem. Palace eunuchs were highly organized and hierarchical. The most powerful eunuch was the head of the Bureau of Ceremonial, which was responsible for organizing the emperor's diary. Eunuch influence, which was sometimes wielded with the greatest honor and integrity, was sorely abused during the Ming dynasty.
